Practicals and parity matrix
Equipment, safety and equivalent routes for Weeks 8–13.
Local policy leads. Complete the school’s normal risk assessment. If the physical route is unsafe or inaccessible, use the offline digital, director, observation or printed route without lowering the scientific goal.
Lesson matrix
| Lesson | Equipment / setup | Safety / sensory | Equivalent route | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| W8A Sugar Evidence: Read the Label | Four fictional or photocopied nutrition-label cards on the same per-100 g basis; number line; results strip; pencil; optional clean empty packets as visual references. | Nothing is eaten, opened or offered as a reward. Use clean empty packages or cards only. Check allergy and safeguarding arrangements even though there is no tasting; keep discussion about labels, not pupils' bodies or food choices. | Use the in-page label lab and preserve the ordered values plus the pupil's bounded conclusion on the print route. | Four sugar values in correct order with g per 100 g, one evidence sentence and one statement of what the comparison cannot show. |
| W8B Body Science Checkpoint | Skeleton or labelled diagram; vertebrate/invertebrate cards; safe card-and-split-pin arm model; nutrition/body-job cards; food-group mats; simple food-chain cards; tiered checkpoint sheet. | Teach bodies and food on models, diagrams and supplied cards, never by judging a pupil's body, diet or home. No food is eaten. Check split pins and small parts, offer a no-touch route and avoid public scores or rank order. | Use the in-page four-strand checkpoint. The same conceptual evidence is produced through card placement, explanation and next-strand choice. | One observable response from each strand, one because connection, the pupil's chosen next strand and an adult witness note naming independence and prompts. |
| W9A Rock Evidence Lab: Look Before You Label | Six teacher-pre-screened coded educational rock specimens or macro cards; white trays; hand lenses; feature tags; two hoops or sorting mats; Rock Comparison Ticket. | Use only pre-inspected educational samples. Keep them on trays and below shoulder height. No throwing, tasting, smelling, grinding, scratching or deliberate breaking. Wash hands after handling. | Use the in-page coded-feature lab and record two specimen codes, two observations and one grouping rule. | A Rock Comparison Ticket with two codes, two observed properties, one similarity, one difference and one explicit grouping rule. |
| W9B Build a Rock Sorting Key | Coded rock specimens or macro cards from W9A; yes/no mats; criterion cards for crystals, grains, bands/planes and holes; Mystery T; Sorting Key Case Card. | Keep pre-screened samples on trays. This is observation and card grouping only: no scratch, water, drop or break tests. A no-touch macro-card route is equivalent. | Use the in-page fixed-criterion key, then record the mystery placement and a second possible criterion. | A Sorting Key Case Card with one exact question, all reference placements, defended Mystery T placement and one complete regrouping rule. |
| W10A Rock Hardness: Mark or Groove? | Two teacher-pretested coded dry rock samples; stable trays; secured blunt scratch jig or teacher demonstration; fixed guide; wipes; hand lens; result card; eye protection where required by local assessment. | Follow the school's current rock-testing risk assessment. No unknown, sharp, dusty or crumbling samples; no hammering, breaking, tasting, smelling or dust blowing. An adult controls the secured tool. Stop immediately on flaking or dust and wash hands. | Use the in-page evidence gate and supplied representative mark/wipe/groove observations. Label them as model data, not results from the class samples. | A Rock Hardness Method Card with prediction, changed sample, controls, after-wipe observation and a relative conclusion within the stated method. |
| W10B Hardness Evidence Lab | Four teacher-pretested coded dry samples; stable individual trays; secured blunt scratch jig or teacher demonstration; fixed guide; wipes; hand lens; four-row result table; eye protection where assessed. | Follow the local risk assessment. No hammering, breaking, tasting, smelling or dust blowing. An adult controls the secured tool. Stop on flaking, crumbling or dust; preserve the note and switch to fixed-data parity. Wash hands. | Use the in-page four-code matrix with A deep, B shallow, C faint and D no groove after wiping. Identify it as representative model data. | A complete four-code raw-results table, one preserved repeat/check note, a relative comparison using at least two codes and one method or sample limitation. |
| W11A Permeability: Surface or Through? | Cross-section picture cards, water-route arrows, observation cards, three-zone evidence sheet and pencil or communication aid. | Core learning uses dry cards. If staff show a tiny water demonstration, use a stable tray and needle-free dropper; pupils do not handle unknown rocks, build rigs, taste, smell, scratch or break samples. | Use the embedded evidence sorter and capture the frozen route locally; no account, upload or live website is needed. | Six classified observations, one labelled through-route, one because explanation and one method-check decision. |
| W11B Water Through Rock Lab | Staff-built sealed rigs; pre-inspected prepared sample pieces; stable trays; 5 mL needle-free pipettes or syringes; marked collectors; 120-second timer; wipes; result sheet. | Only staff build and approve rigs. No hammering, chipping, scratching, licking, tasting, smelling or dust blowing. Keep samples on trays, contain spills, stop for leaks/damage/flaking/dust and wash hands. A director or fixed-data route is full participation. | Use the embedded fixed records: A = 0.5 mL and B = 3.0 mL after the same 5 mL and 120 seconds. Complete the same observation and comparison table. | Method checklist, surface/underside observation, collector values with mL, valid/fault decision, bounded comparison and one method-control question for W13. |
| W12A Rock Jobs: Which Property Matters? | Four supplied job briefs, W10 scratch and W11 water evidence icons, property-question grid and pencil or communication aid. | Use cards or pre-screened lightweight samples on trays. No real construction, site access, heavy lifting, scratching, wetting, breaking, tasting, smelling or collecting is required. | Use the embedded job-property lab and save the frozen question chain locally; no account, upload or live website is needed. | Four job-property questions, two because explanations, one needs-another-check decision and one model limit. |
| W12B Choose Rock for the Job | Fictional job briefs, candidate evidence matrix, decision sheet, audience question card and pencil or communication aid. | Use cards or sealed lightweight display samples only. No real construction, heavy lifting, scraping, wet testing, breaking, climbing or site work is required. | Use the embedded matrix and save the before-and-after choice locally; no account, upload or live website is needed. | Brief criteria, two-candidate comparison, chosen candidate, relevant because evidence, one limit, one audience question and visible response. |
| W13A Fair Test Planner: Change One Thing | Control cards, diagram of staff-built sealed rig, method planner, blank final results table, pilot checklist and pencil or communication aid. | Planning uses dry cards only. Pupils do not cut, seal, build, lift, scratch or prepare rigs or samples. Physical piloting happens only after local risk assessment, staff pretesting and teacher approval. | Use the embedded planner and save the local method card. No camera, account, network, upload or pupil identity is used. | W14 question, prediction, changed variable, measure with unit, at least three controls, repeat plan, blank results table, W13B pilot checks and safety stop. |
| W13B Method Pilot: Test the Test | One clearly labelled staff-prepared practice rig or fixed pilot log; stable tray; 5 mL needle-free tool; 120-second timer; collector; wipes; method V1/V2 sheet; readiness card. | Only staff build and approve a practice rig. No final A/B samples are used. No hammering, chipping, scratching, licking, tasting, smelling or dust blowing. Stop for leaks, instability, damage, flaking, dust or unclear measurement. The fixed pilot-log/director route is full participation. | Use fixed pilot P1/P2 records: P1 edge leak and missing unit; V2 adds seal check and mL heading; P2 seal holds. Make the same revision and readiness decision. | Pilot checklist, one procedure observation or fault, method V1 and visibly revised V2, safety/access decision, W14 readiness card and a statement of what the pilot cannot conclude. |
Shared safeguards
- No pupil is forced to handle equipment, speak publicly or be recorded.
- Pointing, directing an adult, signing, drawing, typing and exact adult scribing can preserve the same conceptual evidence.
- Retries are expected and never scored.
- In-page state exists only in the current tab and clears on reload.
- All links are local; no account, upload or live website is required.
