LAUNCH Humanities — Teesside Migration & Identity (GCSE Bridge)
Upgraded Scheme of Work · Autumn 1 (8 weeks) · AQA UAS 'History around us' + GCSE AO bridge · LAUNCH tier · ★ Week 7 assessed
Unit enquiry
How can pupils reason like GCSE historians — weighing sources, arguing causation in a courtroom, judging utility, change and agency, and sustaining a thesis — all rooted in the migration story of the Tees Valley, and transferring that reasoning to an unfamiliar problem?
Connected studio journey
INVESTIGATE THE SOURCE → TRY THE CAUSES → JUDGE THE ARCHIVE → WEIGH THE CHANGE → DEBATE AGENCY → SUSTAIN A THESIS → ⚖ ASSESS THE SOURCES (assessed) → TRANSFER TO AN UNFAMILIAR MAP
Each week retrieves a judgement from the last and hands one forward; Weeks 1–6 build directly toward the Week 7 assessed source assessment, and Week 8 transfers the reasoning to an unfamiliar OS-map problem and turns a pupil's recommendation into a real change a named adult acts on and reports back.
How these lessons were upgraded (the enhancement layer)
Matt hand-built these as a lean, dark GCSE-bridge suite where each week's accent colour already cycles through the Teesside palette. This upgrade layers the house system on top, dark-aware, without altering a line of his authored content:
- The four Lundy missions are locked to his own accent hues — SPACE steel-blue, VOICE rust, AUDIENCE teal, INFLUENCE gold — the *same zone family as the whole Teesside programme*, in its top-tier register. An animated Lundy loop ring shows the cycle.
- A per-week stamped ticket loop-close (Week 7's is flagged ★ ASSESSED) that, on a hard day, closes the loop on its own.
- An explicit connecting spine band on the LO slide of every lesson (Inherited / Feeds), built from his own influence lines.
- A LAUNCH → GCSE evidence ladder (LAUNCH entry → LAUNCH secure → GCSE reach).
- A "Not a history specialist? Say this" cue in his CHEESE-LAYER slide — the exact words to model, one per week.
- Reading themes that add light Cream / Pink / Blue over the dark studio default — a 📖 Reading toggle that remembers each pupil's choice; his visual-explainer panels are self-contained light islands, so they stay legible.
- Dual Progress + Made by Matt branding (the suite was brand-neutral).
Left deliberately untouched: his engine, his per-week accents, his visual-island explainers, his Calm Mode and his assessment scaffolding.
LAUNCH-tier (GCSE-bridge) design
Progression is GCSE reasoning made accessible: weigh *how far* a source supports a claim, argue causation as decisive/contributing/background, judge source utility for a specific enquiry, weigh change against continuity, debate agency against structure, and sustain a controlling thesis. "Receipt before response" governs the courtroom gallery — reasoning is validated, not popularity. Personal disclosure is never required; whose evidence and whose voice are explicit questions. Adult support and pupil authorship are recorded separately; the loop closes with a report-back contract a named adult must honour. The AO mapping is developmental, not a GCSE grade.
★ Assessment (Week 7)
Week 7 is the assessed source assessment. Apply the centre-approved assessment conditions and each learner's agreed access arrangements (documented in the Week 7 support record). Weeks 1–6 build the thesis plan and the agreed support; Week 8 uses the assessment evidence to steer transfer and intervention.
Lundy zone colours (this suite)
SPACE steel-blue · VOICE rust · AUDIENCE teal · INFLUENCE gold — positions identical to every pathway, hues drawn from his own Teesside accents, in the dark GCSE-bridge register.
Evidence lift (the ladder)
LAUNCH entry = weigh or judge with support; LAUNCH secure = substantiate with evidence and counter-evidence; GCSE reach = sustain a thesis, weigh competing evidence with counter-argument, and transfer the reasoning to an unfamiliar enquiry.
Week 1: Source Investigation
Enquiry: How far does a source support a claim? (content → provenance → context → corroborate → weigh)
Retrieves: unit start. Feeds: the unresolved source issue sets Week 2's causal charge.
Week 2: Cause and Consequence Courtroom
Enquiry: Which causes were decisive, contributing or background?
Retrieves: Week 1's source issue. Feeds: the appeal question selects Week 3's archive source.
Week 3: Archive — Nature, Origin and Purpose
Enquiry: What is the source genuinely useful for?
Retrieves: Week 2's causal verdict. Feeds: utility decisions control the evidence admitted to Week 4.
Week 4: Century of Change
Enquiry: How far was the period a turning point? (change vs continuity)
Retrieves: Week 3's admitted evidence. Feeds: the turning point and continuity open Week 5's agency debate.
Week 5: People and Modern Britain
Enquiry: How far did individuals shape modern Britain? (agency vs structure)
Retrieves: Week 4's turning-point judgement. Feeds: the defended judgement becomes Week 6's thesis choice.
Week 6: Structured Account
Enquiry: How can a thesis control a sustained argument?
Retrieves: Week 5's defended judgement. Feeds: the plan and access contract set Week 7 conditions.
★ Week 7: Source Assessment (assessed)
Enquiry: How useful are the sources for the enquiry?
Retrieves: Week 6's thesis plan and access contract. Feeds: assessment evidence determines Week 8 transfer and intervention.
Week 8: OS Map Skills — Unfamiliar Problem
Enquiry: How can map evidence solve an unfamiliar problem?
Retrieves: Week 7's assessed judgement. Feeds (closes): a named adult acts on one evidence-led recommendation and reports back.
What a trained assessor still needs to provide separately
Add centre-approved referenced source packs and licensed OS-map extracts before teaching. Match UAS evidence to the exact registered unit; apply centre-approved assessment conditions and access arrangements in Week 7. The AO mapping is developmental, not a GCSE grade. These lessons prepare and evidence the history; they do not self-certify the award.
