GROW Humanities — Teesside Migration & Identity (The History Studio)

Upgraded Scheme of Work · Autumn 1 (8 weeks) · AQA UAS 'History around us' · GROW tier · ★ Week 7 assessed

Unit enquiry

How can pupils move beyond activity into *defensible history* — building and challenging chronology, weighing sources, reasoning multi-causally, judging significance, and constructing an independent assessed account — all rooted in the migration story of the Tees Valley?

Connected studio journey

DATE & CHALLENGE → WEIGH THE SOURCE → RANK THE CAUSES → EXPLAIN AGENCY → JUDGE THE DEAL → PLAN THE ACCOUNT → ✍ WRITE IT (assessed) → MAP & INFLUENCE

Each week retrieves a decision from the last and hands one forward; the chain is engineered so that Weeks 1–6 build directly toward the Week 7 assessed account, and Week 8 turns a pupil's recommendation into a real change a named adult acts on and reports back.

How these lessons were upgraded (the enhancement layer)

Matt hand-built these as a dark-mode, place-rooted 12-section GROW "History Studio" suite with a Teesside palette (steel-blue, gold, rust, teal), a real Lundy loop and a deliberately light, tier-appropriate engine. This upgrade layers the house system on top, dark-aware, without altering a line of his authored history content:

Left deliberately untouched: his engine, his dark Teesside palette, his per-week animated explainers, his Calm Mode, and his assessment scaffolding. The engine is deliberately light — right for GROW — so no extra quiz engine was added.

GROW-tier design

Progression is confident-with-doubt: date *and challenge* a chronology, judge a source's utility *for a specific question*, rank multiple causes, defend a significance judgement that "depends," and construct an independent account. Disagreement with a reason is the expected standard. "Peer review validates reasoning, not popularity" runs through the audience protocol. Personal disclosure is never required; whose evidence and whose voice are explicit questions. Adult support and pupil authorship are recorded separately; the Lundy loop closes with a report-back contract a named adult must honour.

★ Assessment (Week 7)

Week 7 is the assessed independent account. Apply the centre-approved assessment conditions and each learner's agreed access arrangements (documented in the Week 7 support-contract record). Weeks 1–6 build the plan and the agreed support; Week 8 uses the assessment evidence to steer reteaching and future assessment.

Lundy zone colours (this suite)

SPACE steel-blue · VOICE rust · AUDIENCE teal · INFLUENCE gold — positions identical to every pathway, hues matching the Teesside programme (art and humanities), expressed here in the dark studio register.

Evidence lift (the ladder)

GROW entry = state or date with support; GROW secure = rank, qualify and explain with evidence; LAUNCH reach = corroborate, weigh competing interpretations, and transfer the reasoning to an unfamiliar source or enquiry.

Week 1: Time Detectives

Enquiry: How can dates, periods and intervals help us build *and challenge* chronology?

Retrieves: unit start. Feeds: your chronology misconceptions and questions set the date supports and source set used in Week 2.

Week 2: Source Detectives

Enquiry: How do provenance, content and context affect what a source tells, suggests or cannot prove?

Retrieves: Week 1's chronology. Feeds: your source challenges set which corroborating evidence and causal claims enter Week 3.

Week 3: Cause and Consequence

Enquiry: How do personal motives, wider conditions and triggers combine to cause migration?

Retrieves: Week 2's evaluated sources. Feeds: your causal rankings set the people, communities and questions offered in Week 4.

Week 4: People Who Shaped Britain

Enquiry: How can we explain historical agency while recognising context and evidence?

Retrieves: Week 3's causal rankings. Feeds: evidence-led nominations (not a vote alone) set which figures enter Week 5.

Week 5: How Big a Deal?

Enquiry: How can criteria, perspective and timescale produce a defensible "how big a deal" judgement?

Retrieves: Week 4's nominations. Feeds: your significance judgements and support requests set Week 6 account questions, source pairings and support.

Week 6: Plan the Account

Enquiry: How can a plan organise chronology, causation and source evidence into an account?

Retrieves: Week 5's significance judgements. Feeds: each learner's evidenced support contract sets Week 7 access; changes are reported back before the assessment.

★ Week 7: Write the Account (assessed)

Enquiry: How can I construct an independent account that uses evidence, explanation and qualified uncertainty?

Retrieves: Week 6's plan and agreed support. Feeds: assessment evidence and reflections set Week 8 reteaching, mapping links and future assessment.

Week 8: Where in the World?

Enquiry: How can atlas evidence and spatial scale deepen — but not replace — historical explanation?

Retrieves: Week 7's assessed account. Feeds (closes): a named adult responds to one evidence-led curriculum, resource or cultural recommendation with an action and deadline.

What a trained assessor still needs to provide separately

Match evidence to the exact selected AQA UAS unit code/version and the centre summary sheet; apply centre-approved assessment conditions and access arrangements in Week 7. Add locally approved, credited historical sources and maps before teaching. These lessons prepare and evidence the history; they do not self-certify the award.
