Where are all the rocky ones? Where are all the gas giants?
"The rocky planets are all near the Sun. The gas giants are all far from the Sun."

How big is the Sun, really?

Bust the mythEarth feels enormous because we live on it. It is not. The Sun is far larger than every planet put together — and it is only an average-sized star.

Watch for: pupils who think the Sun is small because it looks small. It looks small because it is 150 million km away.

Traps to watch

Three myths run this lesson: Earth is bigger than the Sun (it is about 1/109th the width), all planets are rocky (only the inner four), and only Earth has a moon (Uranus has 27; Mercury and Venus have none).
