Arrival 4 min

Whiteboard task as pupils arrive. Space is brand new — find out what they already know.

What do you already know about space?

🌱 Seedling
Working towards

Write or draw two things you might find in space.

Sun · Moon · star · planet · rocket
🌿 Sapling
Expected
  1. Name the star nearest to us.
  2. What do we call the planet we live on?
  3. Name one other planet.
🌳 Oak
Greater depth

What is the difference between a star, a planet and a moon? Have a go — we will check by the end.

Bridge into todayToday we meet our Solar System — the Sun and everything that travels around it. This block asks one big question…
Starter 5 min

Show the words Sun · Earth · Moon · star · asteroid. Which is which?

Sort the sky

Our enquiry question for the whole block: How have ideas about the Solar System changed over time?

🌱 Seedling
Working towards

Match the word to the clue:

Sun = a star · Earth = a planet · Moon = orbits Earth
🌿 Sapling
Expected

Which of these orbits the Sun, and which orbits a planet? Sun · Earth · the Moon · Jupiter.

🌳 Oak

The Sun is a star. Explain why we still call it the centre of the Solar System.

Say thisThe Solar System is the Sun, the eight planets and their moons, plus millions of smaller celestial bodies. The Sun is the only star here — everything else orbits it.

We do · 1 6 min

Name each object as a star, a planet or something else.

Star, planet or…?

☀️ Sun   🌍 Earth   🌙 the Moon   🪐 Jupiter   ☄️ a comet

Reason it out
Does it give out its own light? → star. Does it orbit the Sun? → planet. Does it orbit a planet? → moon.
"The Sun makes its own light, so it is a star. Earth orbits the Sun, so it is a planet."
I do · 2 4 min

Play the animation. Bust two myths as you watch.

One star, eight planets

Sun Pluto (dwarf planet)

The Sun sits at the centre; the planets orbit around it. Pluto is a dwarf planet.

Bust the mythThere is only one star in our Solar System — the Sun. And Pluto is not a planet: it was reclassified as a dwarf planet because it is too small.

Watch for: pupils thinking every dot of light in the sky is a planet, or that Pluto is still a planet.

We do · 2 5 min

Sort a few objects together before the independent task.

Where does it belong?

Quick checkDecide for each: is it the star, a planet, or another body (a moon, dwarf planet, asteroid or comet)?
Sun → ?    Mars → ?    the Moon → ?    Pluto → ?
Remember: a satellite is anything that orbits a planet or a star.

Sort the objects. Then finish: The only star in the Solar System is the ____.

🌿 Sapling

Sort them, then write one sentence explaining why Pluto is in the "other body" group.

Sort them, then explain the rule you used to tell a planet from a moon.

  • The star at the centre is the ____.

A friend says "the Sun is a planet". Explain what is wrong, using the words star and orbit.

🧭 Coming nextWe know what is in the Solar System. Next we meet the eight planets up close.

Traps to watch

Space is new, so vocabulary is fragile. Two big myths: there is more than one star (no — only the Sun), and Pluto is a planet (no — a dwarf planet).
