Test: hold a burning splint near the gas.

Result: a "squeaky pop".

The pop is the tiny explosion of H₂ + O₂ → H₂O.

Oxygen

Test: place a glowing splint into the gas.

Result: the splint relights.

Oxygen supports combustion — it makes things burn.

CO₂

Carbon Dioxide

Test: bubble through limewater (calcium hydroxide solution).

Result: turns milky / cloudy.

CO₂ + Ca(OH)₂ → insoluble CaCO₃ (the white cloudiness).

💡 Key Distinction: Burning splint = flame still lit (for H₂). Glowing splint = blown out so only the red ember remains (for O₂). Students often confuse these!
