Screenshot Culture โ€” Deepfakes & "Just a Joke" Edits

One photo. Free AI. Real law. What every pupil needs to know.

โš ๏ธ Staff โ€” before you start: keep every example at pattern level, never a personal story in the open room. If a pupil begins to disclose, stop the task calmly and follow the school safeguarding procedure. Note anyone who goes quiet and offer a private word afterwards.

โœ”Know the scale โ€” one clothed photo is all free AI needs, and UK deepfake crime is up 550%.
โœ”Know the law โ€” 'just a joke' edits are crimes: creating, sharing, and worse if anyone's under 18.
โœ”Know the 4 moves โ€” exactly what to do if it happens to you or someone else.
How we'll know it landed You can say why one photo is enough, name one of the three crimes, and list the four moves.
What's really happening

The 'just a joke' edit

You've probably seen edited photos in group chats โ€” someone's face on something, passed around 'for a laugh'.

Free AI tools can now make a fake image from one ordinary clothed photo in under 25 seconds. The Internet Watch Foundation reports UK deepfake crimes are up 550% โ€” and 98% of deepfake content online is non-consensual intimate imagery.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Turn & talk: Why do people forward an edit they KNOW is fake โ€” and what happens to the person in it?
Rumour vs fact

'It's just a joke' โ€” vs what the law says

Here's the same edit, seen two ways:

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ The group chat saysโ€ฆ

"It's not real, so it's not serious. It's just banter. Delete it and it's gone."

โš–๏ธ UK law actually saysโ€ฆ

Creating a deepfake intimate image is a crime (Online Safety Act 2023) โ€” even if you never share it. Sharing it: up to 2 years. If the person is under 18: it's a child sexual abuse image โ€” up to 10 years.

"It's just a joke." โ€” the judge has read that exact message many times. It is not a defence.

📸 NOT REAL made in seconds 📤 📤 📤 📤 AND ON ONE DELETE REQUEST, GOING BACKWARDS SHARING IT IS A CHOICE · SO IS STOPPING IT AT YOU
Making it takes seconds. Taking it back takes months, and often doesn't finish. The share is the decision that matters.

One photo lives in more places than you think:

1. Your phone's cloud backup โ€” auto-uploaded the moment you took it.

2. The app's servers โ€” Snapchat, Insta, TikTok keep copies, even 'disappearing' ones.

3. Whoever screenshotted it โ€” the group chat, the forwarded DM, someone's camera roll.

4. AI training data and archive sites โ€” public accounts get scraped and crawled.

Rule of thumb: would your mum, your headteacher and a future employer all be fine seeing it? If any one is "no" โ€” don't send it.

A FEED DOESN'T ASK IF IT'S TRUE
● WHAT IT COSTS
Making it: about a minute. Getting every copy back: months, and usually never finished.
Every repost is a decision · the person in the picture didn't make any of them · the share is the bit you control · stop it at you ·
Nobody in that feed made the fake. Every one of them made a choice about it.
Looking out for each other

If you SEE an edit of someone else

Every view keeps it alive. So:

The person in the image is the victim. How the room reacts decides how much damage it does.
What to do

If it happens to you โ€” 4 moves

1. Screenshot everything. Who posted it, where, their username โ€” before they delete.

2. Report Remove. Free IWF + NSPCC tool for under-18s โ€” gets images taken down across major platforms. Nobody at school is told.

3. CEOP. The police unit for this exact thing โ€” ceop.police.uk. They deal with it every day.

4. Tell an adult. You are the victim. UK police will not treat you as the criminal โ€” Outcome 21 exists to protect young people.

Remember: none of the four moves involves dealing with it alone.
Where to get help

If you've got questions or worries

It's completely okay to want honest answers without being judged.

Worried about something already out there? That's exactly what Report Remove is for โ€” and it works.

Quick check โ€” no pressure

Q1. Creating a deepfake intimate image of someone โ€” even if you never share it โ€” isโ€ฆ

Q2. Someone's made a deepfake of you. Under UK law, you areโ€ฆ

Q3. How many photos does free AI need to make a deepfake?

Nothing added yet.
๐Ÿ”’ What you type is never shown on this screen and is not saved on this device. Only staff can open it, on paper, and only they decide what happens next.
If you need someone tonight: any adult here, or your form tutor tomorrow morning โ€” outside school, Childline 0800 1111 is free, any time, and doesn't show on the bill.

โœ… Nice work

You know the law, you know delete โ‰  deleted, and you know the four moves. That knowledge protects you AND the people around you.
