Burning coal, oil and gas adds carbon dioxide.

2 · Energy route

Extra greenhouse gas absorbs and re-emits more outgoing infrared. At first, less energy escapes overall.

Energy builds up. The global average temperature rises until energy flows balance again.

4 · Effects

Warming can melt land ice and increase the risk of heat extremes.

A fictional centre leaves heating on in empty rooms. Staff propose a timer and temperature checks. This is a plan, not measured results.

Record B · Land ice

Warming increases melting of glaciers and ice sheets. Water from melting land ice adds to the ocean. Adapted factual explanation from the Met Office.

Record C · Cold Tuesday

One town has a cold Tuesday. A pupil says: “Global warming has stopped.” This is a fictional claim to check.

Prior: Recall that the Sun provides energy to Earth. Retrieve weather versus climate without claiming this specific class has already mastered it.

Look for a cause–energy–temperature–effect explanation and a cause-linked action. Do not accept “pollution makes it hot” as the complete mechanism.

Access and independence

Read each short instruction aloud if needed. Let the pupil point, speak or direct a scribe. Fade the prompt before the fresh independent task.

Do not draw a glass dome or impermeable blanket. Arrows show routes, not amounts; gases do not create energy. The natural greenhouse effect helps keep Earth warm enough for life.

This is a qualitative model with no temperature prediction. The action scenario reduces additional emissions, not existing CO2 instantly.

Hold incoming sunlight unchanged within this simple comparison. Avoid “heat trapped forever”. Natural and enhanced effect are linked, not treated as entirely different mechanisms.

Adult building staff decide suitable settings; pupils do not control real equipment. Discuss shared and systemic action, not family blame. Actual savings depend on the building and energy source.

Independent · Use three new records

All records supplied; school plan and Tuesday claim clearly fictional. Do not infer measured savings. Record B addresses land ice rather than confusing floating sea ice with the direct sea-level contribution.

Assessment needs the causal energy link, not only an action slogan. Receive response and ask a question that lets pupil repair a missing mechanism.

Misconceptions

Gases make a solid lid. Gases absorb and re-emit infrared. Energy still leaves.

Every place is hot every day. Global average changes coexist with variable weather.

Less emission means instant cooling. An action can reduce additional warming pressure; response takes time and depends on wider emissions.
