Five in-the-moment steps
1Check Space before anything else. Regulated? Relationship intact? Time and communication access in place? If not, repair Space first — feedback offered into a dysregulated moment is noise, not teaching.
2Give one precise thing. Verbal or written NS+ — one next step linked to the learning, the criteria or safe practice. Not three things. Not presentation-only.
3Make the response possible now. Voice follows the subject: an edit, a re-attempt, a demonstration, a second take, a safer procedure, a spoken explanation. Choose the modality that preserves entitlement with the least unnecessary load.
4Genuinely receive it. Read the correction, watch the re-attempt, listen to the explanation — and engage with it. Only now may R be added, and only where a natural written trace exists.
5Let it change something. The next question, scaffold, explanation, task or target moves because of what the student did. If nothing changed, the loop is decorative — go again smaller.
Firewall: the moment anything sounds like a disclosure, the feedback loop stops and safeguarding procedure takes precedence. No exceptions, no "finish the loop first".
