Enquiry: How far was the period a turning point?

Success looks like

  • I can describe change and continuity across a century
  • I can judge the pace of change with examples
  • I can explain a turning point and defend the choice
Aspire · GCSE reach: argue whether change or continuity mattered more — with criteria.

Arrival Task

Arrival Task – What Do You Already Know?

1. Archive (Last week)

What do N, O, P stand for?

Nature, origin, purpose.

2. Change (Recall)

What is a turning point?

A moment after which things run differently.

3. Local (Recall)

Put in order: ironstone found · furnace cold · bridge opens.

1850 → 1911 → 2015.

4. Continuity (Recall)

What does continuity mean?

Things staying the same across time.

Starter

Starter: 1915 ↔ 2015, One Postcode

Key Question: Two photographs, one street corner, a century apart. The works behind it roared in 1915 and stood silent by 2015. What changed, what stubbornly didn't — and was any single year the hinge?

1915

Furnaces lit, shifts round the clock

The roaring century begins

The Slide

An ending — or a hinge?

The Constant

'Smoggies' — identity outlives industry

Continuity

Pairs: nominate ONE year as the century's hinge — then say what evidence a rival would demand.

I Do

I Do: Change Has Dimensions

Key Idea: A century of change is judged on four dials: direction, pace, extent and domain — and the dials rarely agree.

📖 The Four Dials

Direction — Growth, decline, transformation — which way?

Pace — Rapid rupture or slow drift?

Extent & domain — How much, and in WHICH area — economy, work, identity?

🧠 Watch me think

Set the dials for 1915–2015: economy — direction down, pace gradual-then-sudden, extent severe. Daily work — transformed (shift whistle to shift patterns of a different kind). Identity — direction steady, extent shallow: the Boro is still the Boro. One century, three domains, three different readings. 'Everything changed' just died of measurement.

We Do: Which Dial Is Being Read?

How to play: Tap a claim about the century, then tap the dial it reads. Score: 0/8

Step 1: Tap an item · Step 2: Tap its group

'Heavy industry declined across the century'
'The end came suddenly after decades of drift'
'Work transformed; identity barely moved'
'ICI thinned gradually through the 80s'
'Chemicals rose as iron fell'
'The change was economic more than cultural'
'2015 felt overnight — it wasn't'
'Population growth reversed after 1970'

I Do

I Do: Testing a Turning Point

Key Idea: 'Turning point' is a claim, not a feeling: it must show direction DIFFERENT after than before, with the hinge doing the turning.

📖 The Hinge Test

Before-line — Establish the trajectory up to the candidate year.

After-line — Establish the trajectory following it.

Attribution — Show the hinge caused the bend — not just sat at it.

🧠 Watch me think

Test 2015 as the hinge: before-line — steel already shrinking for forty years. After-line — continued decline, plus renewal projects. The direction didn't BEND in 2015; it concluded. So 2015 is an ENDPOINT, not a turning point — the bend came earlier, arguably the 1970s oil-and-steel shocks. The test just demoted the famous year. That's LAUNCH: the obvious candidate interrogated, not crowned.

We Do

We Do: Match the Candidate Year → Its Verdict Under the Hinge Test

How to play: Tap a card, then tap its correct partner. Score: 0/6
🗓️ 1850
🗓️ 1915 wartime peak
🗓️ The 1930s slump
🗓️ The 1970s shocks
🗓️ 2015 closure
🗓️ The renewal 2020s
Endpoint — concludes a bend made earlier
Strong candidate — decline's direction sets in
True hinge — hamlet to iron town bends here
Acceleration, not a bend — direction unchanged
Too soon — after-line still being drawn
A dip the after-line recovered from

Independent Work

Independent Work — Show What You Know

Instructions: Work at your level on the printed sheet. Move up a level when you are ready — this is your call to make.

Supported

Task: Dial sheet: set direction/pace/extent for TWO domains (work, identity) across the century using the evidence cards.

Steps: One dial row per domain · evidence card cited per dial · 'the dials disagree because…' sentence.

Standard

Task: Hinge test in writing: run before-line/after-line/attribution on ONE candidate year and deliver the verdict.

Steps: Candidate declared · both trajectory lines evidenced · attribution argued · verdict: hinge, endpoint, dip or acceleration.

Stretch

Task: The full century essay plan: dials per domain, two hinge tests (one confirmed, one demoted), extent verdict with domains split.

Steps: Plan not prose · both tests run · 'how far did Teesside change' answered per domain · the famous-year demotion defended.

Lundy Loop

Lundy Loop — Your Voice in This Enquiry

Why: Article 12 — your view on this history counts, and it changes what we do next week.

🚪 SPACE

The Century Wall spans the corridor — your dial readings and hinge verdicts pin wherever the timeline needs them.

📣 VOICE

Defend your hinge verdict in the two-minute colloquium; challenges must cite a trajectory line.

👥 AUDIENCE

The Century Wall is the showcase centrepiece — families will read YOUR verdicts on their own lived decades.

⭐ INFLUENCE

Week 5 ballot: which individuals go under the agency lens? Nominate from any decade the wall now holds.

Exit Ticket

Instructions: Answer independently. No notes.

1.

Name two of the four dials.

Direction, pace, extent, domain.

2.

2015: turning point or endpoint?

Endpoint — the bend came earlier.

3.

What stayed most continuous across the century?

Identity — the Boro remained the Boro.
