Ten seconds is longer than you think

One artwork, ten silent seconds, one word — hold it. Now compare with your partner: same image, different words? Ten honest seconds of looking beats ten minutes of walking past. Why?

Sentence stems:
“My word was ___ because…”
“My partner saw ___ — I missed it because…”
“Walking past, I’d never have…”

What your eyes actually land on: “gold light from the left”, “two figures, one door”. Raw noticing, no polish.

💭 Feel

What arrives in you: lonely, held, unsettled, home. First feelings fade fast — note them at the pause, not at the end.

❓ Wonder

The questions the work plants: “who is she waiting for?” “why so much empty sky?” “I wonder” is the most honest note in any journal.

📝 During beats after

We pause the tour and note AS WE GO. Memory edits; the page taken during is the true record — and it’s next week’s review fuel.

Misconception: ~~“You need to understand an artwork before you can respond to it.”~~ First responses come FIRST — confusion, precisely described, is a real response. Understanding often arrives while you’re writing the wonder down, not before.

Ground rule (60 seconds): when the tour plays, the room gives it real attention — pauses are for noting, and every response written during counts as portfolio evidence.

Station 1 · THE TOUR

The virtual gallery tour, together, paused at agreed works. At each pause: one see, one feel or one wonder onto your page — voice-noting counts.

Station 2 · FIRST-RESPONSE PAGE

Complete the page during and straight after: sees, feels, wonders — raw, unpolished, yours. Check it against last week’s HOPE: did you get it?

Station 3 · ONE NOTICED

Share one “I noticed…” with a partner or the TA. Noticings said aloud become next week’s review sentences.
