Practitioner Research

Three facts · One opinion · One influence

Today is a hands-on lesson — we learn by doing.

Fact, opinion — or feeling?

Tap a card, then tap where it belongs. Have a go — wrong answers are welcome here.

While you wait: three works on screen: pick the one that pulls you, and draft your why in your head.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE

LO: To research one artist whose work links to identity and record three facts and one opinion.

I can research a practitioner using video, images and short text.
I can record three facts in my own words.
I can give one opinion — argued, not just felt.
Success criteria: By the end you will have researched a practitioner together, chosen your own from the identity/belonging menu — a light artist and an installation artist included — and completed the arts-log page: three facts, one argued opinion, in your own words (Unit 1 Part B).
GCSE Stretch: the influence line: “from their work I could develop ___ in my own portrait” — research feeding practice is the whole point of Part B.

Practitioner — why the bigger word?

We say “practitioner”, not just “artist”. With your partner: what does a PRACTICE sound like — one lucky masterpiece, or years of making, failing, refining? Which word takes the pressure off YOUR work, and why?

Sentence stems:
“A practice sounds like…”
“One masterpiece is a ___; a practice is a…”
“It takes the pressure off because…”

Research that earns its place in a portfolio

📌 Facts — own words

Three, checkable, REPHRASED. Copied text is dead weight in a portfolio; a fact in your own words proves you actually met it.

💬 The argued opinion

A judgement about the WORK with a because attached: “her symbols carry more than her colour — in ___ the ___ does the talking”. Feelings are free; opinions are earned.

🧲 The influence link

Part B research points at Part A practice: what could you DEVELOP from them? A palette, a scale, a trick of light — name it and it becomes yours to try.

🎬 Research with eyes

Short video, big images, captions — dense text last, and read-aloud is always available. The work itself is the best source about the work.

Misconception: “Good research means copying down everything important.” Portfolio research is SELECTED and OWNED: three facts that matter, rephrased; one opinion, argued; one influence, aimed at your own practice. A page you could defend beats a page you copied.

Sort the responses — FACT, OPINION or FEELING?

HANDS-ON · the main event

Meet your practitioner 🔍

Ground rule (60 seconds): “not for me, because…” is criticism; “that’s rubbish” is noise — this room deals in criticism.

Station 1 · WATCH & LOOK

Class research on one practitioner: video, big images, pauses. Build the fact-bank together — rephrasing as you go.

Station 2 · CHOOSE & LOG

Your practitioner from the identity/belonging menu. Three facts (own words) + one argued opinion into the log — verbal drafting first is a route.

Station 3 · THE INFLUENCE & THE RESPONSE

Say the influence line to a partner or the TA: “from their work I could develop…” — and note it where Week 4 will find it. Then close the loop: having heard your partner’s practitioner, finish “what I now think…” — one journal line, and this week’s R is banked.

GCSE Stretch: evidence the opinion from a NAMED work — “in ___, the ___ proves it” — a review sentence, five weeks early.
EVIDENCE · Arts Award Silver portfolio · Unit 1 Part B (research)

Capture your evidence

Your research page is the evidence — three facts, one argued opinion, own words (verbal drafting counts):

My name:

My practitioner + the fact that surprised me most:

My opinion, with its because:

Skills I used today (tick with your TA): Analysis · Literacy · Ability to learn

Feedback loop: your teacher will deep-mark one part of this in dark green and draw a Yellow Box. Next lesson you respond inside it in a coloured pen of your choice.
