STARTER · talk task
“This is not a pipe”
Magritte painted a perfect pipe and wrote underneath: “this is not a pipe.” With your partner: is he lying? What IS it, if not a pipe? What is he making you notice about every picture you have ever seen?
Sentence stems: “It isn’t a pipe, it’s a…” “He’s making us notice that…” “Every picture is really…”
Stuck? Try to smoke it. It’s paint — an IMAGE of a pipe. Magritte’s joke is dead serious: pictures are made things, and made things were made by choices. Your job this term is choices.

The detective method — and the surrealists who reward it
🔍 Describe first
What is actually there: colours, objects, scale, surface. Description is the evidence base every response stands on — rush past it and everything after wobbles.
💭 Then interpret
What might it MEAN: “perhaps the apple hides the self we don’t show”. Interpretations are fair steps from described evidence — “perhaps” and “suggests” are their honest verbs.
⚖️ Then judge
Your verdict with its because. Judging before describing is just noise; judging after is criticism — a skill your Silver review unit will bank later this term.

Your portfolio’s spine: what I tried, what I noticed, WHY I chose. Reflection is evidence at Silver — the journal opens today and never really closes.
Misconception:“Galleries are for people who already understand art.” The only equipment is eyes, patience and honesty — the detective method IS the understanding. Confusion, described precisely, is a better gallery response than fake certainty.

In the frame = describe. A “perhaps/suggests” step from evidence = interpret. A verdict with a because = judge. Read the sentence’s job, not its topic.

Station 1 · GALLERY DETECTIVES
Walk the projected works with the D-I-J cards. At each: one describe, one interpret, one judge — spoken responses count and get scribed verbatim.
Station 2 · MEDIA CAROUSEL
Collage, drawing, paint, digital — surreal self-portrait ideas at each: an object for a face, a symbol in the sky. Gathering media data, not making masterpieces.
Station 3 · BATTLE & JOURNAL
Three-minute art battle on a surreal prompt — then open the Silver journal: what I tried, what I noticed, one line each. First portfolio entry, done.
GCSE Stretch: the artist-study page: one Magritte or Kahlo image, annotated — what they did, how, and what you might develop from it.
