Spark: Looking back on purpose is how the unit closes.
Success looks like
I can review my own success in communicating
I can name what went well and an area to develop
I can outline where I will use this skill in future
Aspire Β· describe how my communication met the ComSk1 criteria, with evidence β a Level 1 evidence standard.
Teacher Print Tools β Week 6
Staff — ComSk1: what the unit actually requires (spec v1.2, Oct 2025). Know: at least 3 ways of communicating; at least 4 components of effective communication; at least 3 difficulties. Plan: SMART; at least 4 questions the audience could ask, with responses, written into the plan. Use the plan — ONE activity only: a presentation of at least 3 minutes, or a discussion of at least 8 minutes, or a written text of at least 250 words. Any group activity needs at least 3 members. Review: at least 2 positive outcomes and at least 2 areas of further development (a learner with no difficulties may say so). There is no 10-hour plan-use requirement on Communication — that gate sits on the other five skills. This lesson sequence uses the talk-or-text routes; the discussion route is equally valid if a pupil chooses it.
Retrieval Quiz
Arrival Task β What Do You Already Know?
1. Say it
Name one thing that went well in your communication activity.
Any honest answer counts β say it out loud.
2. Spot it
Name one thing you would do better next time.
Any honest answer counts β say it out loud.
3. Point to it
Point to the evidence in your portfolio.
Any honest answer counts β say it out loud.
1. The big idea
Why is reviewing your own success part of the skill, not an extra?
Own words β knowing how you did is how you improve next time.
2. Todayβs work
What are the four things a good review names?
A sensible answer β a positive outcome, use of listening, an area to develop, future use.
3. Success check
How do you know your Communication unit is complete?
Name one thing β plan, delivery and review all evidenced.
1. Review logic
Why is an honest review stronger evidence than a glowing one?
Because moderators trust a candidate who can name a real area to develop.
2. Evidence test
Point to the single strongest piece of ComSk1 evidence you produced. Why?
Own pick + reasons tied to the criteria.
3. Transfer
Where will strong communication matter after this unit? Argue it.
Own argument β interviews, work, independent living; naming it makes the skill portable.

Step 0 of 3
Name a positive outcome β with evidence.
Point to a specific success in your activity and the evidence for it. This is the first part of the ComSk1 review.
Name your use of active listening and an area to develop.
Say where listening helped, and choose two honest things to grow. An honest gap is a strength at moderation, not a weakness.
Name future use, and sign off.
Say where you will use communication next. With plan, delivery and review all evidenced, the unit is complete and can be signed off.

Witness
the assessor signs that the Communication unit is complete.
For the moderator, not just the folder
A tick says it happened. A witness statement says what you did. Before the photo is filed, the adult writes one sentence naming the thing they actually saw you do — and rings whether you did it Supported, Standard or Stretch.
That ring is the part that counts. It is the difference between “the class did this” and “this candidate did it, at this level, with this much help.” The witness sheet prints with every pack.

Scaffolding β Supported
Access & sensory notes (staff) · The supported task today is: Complete a review card by choosing what went well and one thing to grow, with an adult. · Fine motor: offer the chunky-grip pen, and accept a card sort or a spoken answer scribed by an adult — the judgement is the evidence, not the handwriting. · Sensory: offer the write-it-first option before any share-aloud; nobody is put on the spot cold. · Cognitive load: a completed small piece beats a half-done large one at moderation. Cut the target, never the thinking. · Ring the level honestly on the witness sheet. Supported with the work finished is a stronger portfolio entry than Standard with it abandoned.
