I Do

The Model — Identifying a Community Need

Key Idea: A real need has people affected and evidence behind it.
Step 0 of 3

Spot the need.

Look around your community for what is missing or struggling: a tidy space, a lonely group, a service gap. Notice, do not assume.

Find who is affected.

A real need has real people behind it. Naming who benefits keeps the project honest and focused on them, not on you.

Evidence it is real.

Back the need with evidence: what people say, or what you can see. Evidence turns ‘a nice idea’ into ‘a need worth acting on’.

I Do

Proving It — The Evidence Loop

Key Idea: A need backed by evidence is the foundation of a real project.
Step 0 of 3

Documentarian

photo your community need with its evidence.

Annotate

write ‘the people who benefit are ___’.

Witness

staff sign your identified need.

For the moderator, not just the folder

A tick says it happened. A witness statement says what you did. Before the photo is filed, the adult writes one sentence naming the thing they actually saw you do — and rings whether you did it Supported, Standard or Stretch.

That ring is the part that counts. It is the difference between “the class did this” and “this candidate did it, at this level, with this much help.” The witness sheet prints with every pack.

🤝 With support

Task: Sort need cards into REAL NEED and JUST A WISH, then pick one and say who it helps, with an adult.

Steps: One step at a time — adult support is right there. Photo it when you are proud of it.

👤 On your own

Task: Identify a real community need, gather evidence for it, and name who would benefit.

Steps: Work it through — photo as you go, annotate at the end, witness tick before you pack up.

🚀 Take it further

Task: Identify several needs, rank them by impact and how fixable they are, and justify your top choice.

Steps: Task first, ranking second — say why your top need is both real and doable.
