Name the Guide, Say the Meaning

LAUNCH Humanities · Week 3 of 8 · Humanities slot · Religious Education and Ethics.

Objective: I can name where a source of authority comes from, and say one meaning believers take from it, using the approved source cards.

Success evidence: a record sheet with a card letter, a source type, a meaning sentence, and a sure or not sure mark.

You are never asked what you believe. You are never asked about home, family or religion at home. Every card is school-approved and supplied.

40 minutes. Offline.

Resources, all in the LAUNCH Humanities W3 folder in the Humanities cupboard: one laminated set of approved source Cards A to F per table, the printed record sheets, and the word bank sheet. Card A and Card C are the two you model, and their answers are given to the class. Card B is the We Do card. Card D is the shared We Do 2 card and is worked on the board only. Cards E and F are the independent cards; do not show them before Independent. Keep record sheets and word banks face down until Independent. Nothing here is online and nothing else is needed.

Read the four statements. Say true or false.

Answers: true, true, true, false. Number four is false. If the card does not say it, we mark not sure.

Two pupils read the same approved card. They gave different answers.

Answer one: it is right because the sacred text says so.

Answer two: it is right because our community has always done it this way.

Both answers name a guide. Authority means a guide people follow. The two guides are different. Each needs a name.

Write the four source types on the board now: T sacred text, L religious leader, C community tradition, R reason and conscience. Leave them up all lesson.

Three words

The four source types

Watch me work on Card A. I never use my own life.

Card A prints one line from a sacred text. The card names the book. The source type is T.

The line is about welcoming a stranger. Many believers read it as a rule to be kind.

Card A does not say who wrote the line. I do not guess. I tick not sure.

We Do · everyone commits

Everyone gets Card B. Nobody speaks yet.

Write one letter for the source type: T, L, C or R.

Turn your paper over. We reveal on three, when everyone has written or pointed.

Then two pupils say why. Point at the words on Card B.

Now I join two jobs. One is where it comes from. One is what it means.

Card C shows a yearly shared meal. The group has done it a long time. The source type is C.

Believers may take this meaning: we eat together to remember.

Two believers can share one source and take different meanings. Watch me do that with Card A.

Meaning one: be kind to a visitor. Meaning two: make room for a new person.

Both meanings come from the same line. One is about a visitor. One is about a group.

One card now. We work Card D together on the board.

Name the source type first. Then write one meaning sentence.

Choose a row. You can change row at any time. A row is a choice, not a label.

Card D stays on the board; nobody has a copy. Read it aloud twice. Then let each row write.

This is doing time. You write.

Take a record sheet, Card E and Card F. These cards are new. Do both if you can. One card done fully is a real result.

For each card write three things.

Work at your own pace. You may use the word bank. An adult can read a card aloud, or write your words down.

Read any card aloud whenever a pupil asks. This is not a reading test. Scribe on request and read the words back.

You say one thing. An adult writes it in your words.

Say one card letter and its source type. Or point at your sheet. Pointing counts.

The adult reads your words back exactly. You say yes, or you correct it.

Then you choose one next action. The adult writes it on your sheet.
