While you wait: look at your piece with fresh eyes — a week away changes what you see. What’s different today?
LEARNING OBJECTIVE

LO: To look at my artwork and make one improvement.

I can review my piece: one star, one step.
I can make one improvement, properly.
I can evidence it with a before/after pair and a reason.
Success criteria: By the end you will have reviewed the demo piece as a class, chosen and made ONE improvement to your own piece, and banked the before/after pair with an “I improved… by… because…” line — review-and-develop evidence for the Explore log (AQA UAS ‘Creating artwork’).
GCSE Stretch: evaluate like Bronze asks: star, step, AND the effect — “the change makes the piece feel more ___ because…”
STARTER · talk task

Fresh eyes are a tool

With your partner: why does a week away from your own work change what you can see in it? Where else does the fresh-eyes trick work — writing, football, a bedroom you’re tidying?

Sentence stems:
“A week away means…”
“When I looked today I suddenly saw…”
“Fresh eyes also work on…”
I DO · teacher explains

Review is a skill with a shape

⭐ Star first

What already works, named precisely — “the texture in that corner carries the whole mood”. Reviewing starts from strength.

🪜 One step

One small change: contrast, a symbol clarified, texture built. Chosen because of the star — the step should make the star shine harder.

📷 Prove it

BEFORE photo, change, AFTER photo. Then the reason: “I improved ___ by ___ BECAUSE ___”. The because is the Grow upgrade.

🧐 Evaluate

Bronze wants the effect named too: what does the piece feel like NOW that it didn’t before? That sentence is a review in miniature.

Misconception: “If it needs improving, it wasn’t good.” The star proves it was already working; the step makes it work harder. Improvement is a compliment you pay your own piece — galleries hang work that was repainted a dozen times.

HANDS-ON · the main event

Take the step ⭐

Ground rule (60 seconds): the star is spoken before the step is touched — and every reason starts with “because”.

Station 1 · CLASS REVIEW

The demo piece: one precise star, one small step, agreed together. Watch the improvement land — and name what changed in the feel.

Station 2 · YOUR STEP

BEFORE photo, then your one improvement — the one that serves your star. Done properly beats done big.

Station 3 · PROVE & REASON

Bank the before/after pair. The line: “I improved ___ by ___ because ___” — voiced first, key words in your own hand.

GCSE Stretch: the evaluation line: “the change makes it feel more ___ because…” — effect named, Bronze satisfied.
EVIDENCE · Arts Award Explore log (toward Bronze) · before/after + reason · AQA UAS ‘Creating artwork’

Capture your evidence

Before/after pair banked. Complete the reasoned line (key words in your own hand):

My name:

My star — what already worked:

I improved ___ by ___ because ___:

Skills I used today (tick with your TA): Ability to learn · Resilience · Literacy

Feedback loop: your teacher will deep-mark one part of this in dark green and draw a Yellow Box. Next lesson you respond inside it in a coloured pen of your choice.
