ARRIVAL TASK · do now, no help needed

Fair borrowing — or copying?

Tap a card, then tap where it belongs. Have a go — wrong answers are welcome here.

While you wait: look at the BHM artist’s work on screen — find one idea small enough to fit in your pocket.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE

LO: To create my identity artwork using ideas from an artist who inspires me.

I can name one borrowed idea and its artist.
I can build my piece from my Week 3 plan.
I can photograph the stages as I go.
Success criteria: By the end you will have tested a borrowed idea on scrap, built your identity piece from last week’s plan with the borrowed idea worked in, and photographed the stages — evidence into the Explore log with the artist credited (AQA UAS ‘Creating artwork’).
GCSE Stretch: annotate one stage photo sketchbook-style: what I did, why, what changed — that IS a GCSE development page.

One artist, one pocket-sized idea

This Black History Month artist’s work fills the screen. Don’t look for the whole style — hunt for ONE pocket-sized idea: a colour pair, an outline weight, a texture move. With your partner: what would YOU pocket?

Sentence stems:
“I’d pocket the…”
“It would work in my piece because…”
“Their big style I’ll leave — my piece is…”
I DO · teacher explains

Borrow small, credit loud, make yours

🤏 Borrow small

One idea only. A pocketed colour pair improves your piece; a lifted whole style erases it.

📣 Credit loud

Name the artist in your log — “I borrowed ___ from ___”. Crediting is what separates influence from theft, in classrooms and in galleries.

🛠️ The plan drives

Your Week 3 plan is the boss: its idea, its materials, its technique, its symbol. The borrowed idea serves YOUR plan, never the reverse.

📷 Stages

Start, middle, wherever you reach — photographed. Unfinished is a valid state; undocumented isn’t.

Misconception: “Real artists work from pure imagination — borrowing is weakness.” Every artist you’ve met this term borrowed — surrealists from dreams and each other, Kahlo from Mexican folk art. Influence is the engine of art; crediting it is the honesty.

Sort the moves — fair borrowing, or copying?

HANDS-ON · the main event

Make it ✋

Ground rule (60 seconds): aprons on, respect every half-made piece — and the plan on your desk outranks every passing suggestion, including an adult’s.

Station 1 · SCRAP TEST

Test the pocketed idea on scrap: the colour pair, the outline weight, the texture move. Sixty seconds of scrap protects an hour of piece.

Station 2 · CREATE

Build from your plan: idea, materials, technique, symbol — borrowed idea worked in where it serves. Texture and material routes stay fully open.

Station 3 · STAGE & CREDIT

Photograph the stages in order. Credit line into the log: “I borrowed ___ from ___” — spoken then key words in your own hand.

GCSE Stretch: annotate one stage photo: what I did / why / what changed — stick it in the sketchbook as a development page.
EVIDENCE · Arts Award Explore log (toward Bronze) · staged photos · AQA UAS ‘Creating artwork’

Capture your evidence

Staged photos banked in order. Complete the credit and pride lines (key words in your own hand):

My name:

I borrowed ___ from ___ (idea + artist):

The stage I’m proudest of, and why:

Skills I used today (tick with your TA): Creativity · Independence · Resilience

Feedback loop: your teacher will deep-mark one part of this in dark green and draw a Yellow Box. Next lesson you respond inside it in a coloured pen of your choice.
