Success criteria: By the end you will have pulled your “this is me” cards, completed a picture-supported plan — what I’ll make, materials, and the colours that mean something to me — and told the TA one thing your piece will show. The plan is a log page (AQA UAS ‘Creating artwork’).

GCSE Stretch: add the influence line: “influenced by ___ because…” — naming your influences is Bronze/GCSE habit.

Why do materials mean things?

With your partner: rusty metal, soft wool, cracked clay, smooth glass. Before an artist shapes them, the materials already whisper something. What does each one whisper — and which whispers like YOU?

Sentence stems:

💡 Idea

What your piece is ABOUT — pinned in one line. Your Week 2 symbol probably already knows.

🧵 Materials

Chosen because they FIT: rough idea, rough textures; calm idea, smooth and cool. Materials carry meaning before you touch them.

🎨 Technique

The one you levelled up — a plan that spends a practised skill is a plan that finishes.

🔣 Symbol

The Grow upgrade: your plan names its symbol and what job it does. One symbol, working hard, beats five decorating.

Misconception: ~~“A plan locks you in.”~~ A plan is a springboard — artists revise constantly. But a springboard has to exist: next week you start making, and the plan is what makes starting easy.

Ground rule (60 seconds): your piece shares exactly as much as you choose — interests are a complete identity, and private stays private.

Station 1 · THIS IS ME CARDS

Pull three image or word cards that feel like you — plus ONE material sample whose feel fits. Trust the quick pull.

Station 2 · THE PLAN PAGE

Complete the plan: what I’ll make / materials / technique / my symbol and its job / colours that mean something. Ideas voiced or scribed first; the choices written in your own hand.

Station 3 · TELL ONE THING

One line to the TA: “my piece will show…” — an interest, a mood, a place. One honest line is the whole job.

GCSE Stretch: the influence line: “influenced by ___ because…” — Magritte’s misplacing, Kahlo’s symbols, or your BHM artist’s colour.
