BUILD Vocational / D&T — Teesside Community Upcycling
Scheme of Work · Autumn 1 · reclaimed timber → community assets · ASDAN Vocational/D&T portfolio
Focus: transforming reclaimed materials (e.g. pallets) into functional community assets — modular planters or wildlife boxes for a local green space (e.g. Stewart Park / South Gare). Construction is brought into Autumn 1. Runs across two slots: Slot 2 · Vocational/D&T delivers the build; Slot 5 · Community A carries the partner liaison, site need and handover.
Standard lesson blueprint (every week)
- Arrival (10 min): a 2×2 retrieval grid + a subject-specific wordsearch (no crosswords) to settle the room and build vocational vocabulary.
- ▣ MODEL zone — I do / we do (15 min): visual knowledge organiser + explicit modelling and scaffolded tool handling.
- ◆ INDEPENDENT zone — you do (20 min): differentiated Standard and Supported tasks (toggle in the pack). Supported = step-by-step visual guide, minimal clutter, pre-cut templates.
- Evidence & review (10 min): update the ASDAN tracker and predicted grade.
Zones are icon + label + colour — never colour alone (colourblind-safe). Calm Mode, reduced-motion and print are built in. SEMH-safe throughout: success-first, no leaderboards, movement built in.
Launch-level evidence engine (embedded in every pack)
- Documentarian role: a rotating pupil photographs practical work on a tablet during the You-Do phase (addresses Lundy Voice and gives authority).
- Annotated visuals: photos print straight onto portfolio sheets; pupils add sharp, guided annotations instead of essays, ticking ASDAN criteria visually.
- Witness-statement shorthand: pre-printed staff statements on the back of task sheets — tick the exact Lundy/ASDAN competency observed, sign, and it becomes portfolio evidence instantly.
The 6-week sequence
- W1 The Workshop Audit — health, safety & tool ID. Lundy VOICE: vote the community asset.
- W2 The Blueprint — measuring, marking & numeracy (mm, try square). Lundy AUDIENCE: partner sign-off.
- W3 The Core Cut — clamping & sawing; *connection before correction* before tools are unlocked. Lundy INFLUENCE: adapt, don't waste.
- W4 The Assembly — pilot holes, countersinking, square joints. Lundy VOICE: explain a joining choice.
- W5 The Finish — sanding grades, weatherproofing, quality control. Lundy AUDIENCE: class QC check.
- W6 The Handover — evaluate against the blueprint; collate & annotate the portfolio; lock the predicted grade. Lundy INFLUENCE: community benefit + who reports back.
- W7–8 (in the weekly plans): finish/overflow, strengthen evidence, complete the ASDAN portfolio and agree the first Aut2 construction step.
