Why drill a pilot hole first?
A screw is a wedge. Driven into solid timber near an edge it forces the fibres apart and splits the wood. The pilot hole gives it somewhere to go.
2. Prove it
Screws, nails or glue β which is strongest here, and why?
Screws. They pull the pieces together and can be undone; nails rely on friction and glue alone won't hold end-grain outdoors.
3. Flip it
Why check square BEFORE fixing rather than after?
Because after is too late. An out-of-square corner fixed with countersunk screws has to be drilled out, and reclaimed timber doesn't survive many second chances.

Square it first β because after the screw, it's staying.
Hold the try square in the corner before anything is fixed. A corner that is two degrees out looks fine now and shows up as a rocking planter later. Check, adjust, then fix.
The pilot hole stops the split.
A screw is a wedge. Drive it into solid timber near an edge and it forces the fibres apart β reclaimed wood splits especially easily. The pilot hole gives the screw somewhere to go instead of through your board.
Countersink, then drive with control.
The countersink lets the head sit flush instead of standing proud where hands and clothes catch it. Then drive slowly β a screw driven fast strips its own hole and holds nothing.
