Festival Sounds
Hear it · Feel it · Play it
🎶🥁🔔🎧✨
Today is a hands-on lesson — we learn by doing.
ARRIVAL TASK · do now, no help needed
Loud or soft? Sort the sounds
Tap a card, then tap where it belongs. Have a go — wrong answers are welcome here.
While you wait: sit still for ten seconds and count the sounds you can hear right now.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
LO: To explore festival sounds and instruments and show how they make me feel.
✓ I can describe a sound: loud/soft, fast/slow, happy/calm.
✓ I can match sounds to feelings in my log.
✓ I can record or play my favourite sound.
Success criteria: By the end you will have explored the instrument set, matched sounds to feeling symbols in your log, and recorded a favourite-sound clip — and the set plays LIVE as the soundtrack to the RE showcase, so the two finales join up. This page completes your Explore log for the half-term (AQA UAS ‘Creating artwork’).
Going for Grow: layer two sounds together and name the mood you built — that is composing.
STARTER · talk task
Eyes closed — what did that sound feel like?
Eyes closed. One festival sound plays. Don’t name the instrument — catch the FEELING first. One word, or point to a feeling-symbol. Then compare with your partner: same sound, same feeling?
Sentence stems: “It felt…” “It made me think of…” “My partner felt ___ — same sound!”
Stuck? Notice your body: shoulders up or down? Feet wanting to move or be still? Your body answers before your words do — that answer counts.
I DO · teacher explains
Sound is art you feel with your whole body
🔊 Describing sound
Four levers: loud/soft, fast/slow — and the feeling they build: happy, calm, excited, gentle. Two levers, one mood.
🎉 Why festivals use sound
Drums for excitement, bells for wonder, songs for together-ness — festivals of light across the world are built on sound doing feelings at scale.
🥁 The set
Today you try the instruments — drums, bells, shakers and more. Try, listen, match the sound to a feeling symbol. There is no wrong match: it’s YOUR feeling.
✨ The live finale
This isn’t practice for nothing: our sound set plays LIVE as the soundtrack to the RE showcase — the term’s two finales join up, and you’re the band.
Misconception:“Music isn’t proper art — it doesn’t count for the Arts Award.” The Arts Award counts ALL art forms — sound, music, dance, drama, the lot. Your sound→feeling page is exactly the evidence it wants, and it completes your Explore log today.
WE DO · together on the board
Sort the words — describing the SOUND, or naming the FEELING?
Sound words describe what your EARS get: booming, jingling, rattling. Feeling words describe what happens INSIDE you: peaceful, joyful, excited.
HANDS-ON · the main event
Play the set 🎶
Ground rule (60 seconds): one sound at a time when we’re listening, everyone at once when we’re playing — and ear defenders are on the side for anyone who wants the volume managed.
Station 1 · EXPLORE THE SET
Try each instrument. For each one: make the sound, catch the feeling, match it to a feeling symbol in your log. Your matches are yours — no wrong answers.
Station 2 · RECORD A FAVOURITE
Record a short clip of your favourite sound. Say one word about the feeling if you want — the clip alone counts.
Station 3 · PLAY IT LIVE
Play your favourite to the group — opt-out completely fine. Then the big one: the set rehearses its moment as the RE showcase soundtrack. Two finales, one band.
Going for Grow: layer two sounds — drum under bells, shaker under song — and name the mood you built: that is a composer’s move.
EVIDENCE · Arts Award Explore log · sound→feeling page + clips · COMPLETES the half-term log · AQA UAS ‘Creating artwork’
Capture your evidence
Your sound→feeling page and clip complete the Explore log — TA banks both. Final entries (scribing counts):
My name:
My favourite sound and the instrument that makes it:
The feeling it gives me:
Skills I used today (tick with your TA): Creativity · Communication · Teamwork
Feedback loop: your teacher will deep-mark one part of this in dark green and draw a Yellow Box. Next lesson you respond inside it in a coloured pen of your choice.
