Level It Up
Attempt 1 · Coach tip · Attempt 3
🎮📈📷🎨⭐
Today is a hands-on lesson — we learn by doing.
ARRIVAL TASK · do now, no help needed
Levels you up — or keeps you stuck?
Tap a card, then tap where it belongs. Have a go — wrong answers are welcome here.
While you wait: tell your partner how you got better at a game you play — what actually worked?
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
LO: To practise one skill and show how I got better at it.
✓ I can try the same skill three times.
✓ I can use a coach tip between attempts.
✓ I can show my improvement in a photo strip.
Success criteria: By the end you will have run the three-attempt loop on your Week 1 favourite, used the levelled-up skill on a surreal “this is me” symbol experiment, and logged your photo strip with a “what I improved” comment — Part B evidence (AQA UAS ‘Creating artwork’).
Going for Grow: name the EXACT change that made attempt 3 better — “more ink at the edge”, not just “it’s better”.
STARTER · talk task
How do you actually get better at a game?
With your partner: nobody beats a level first try. What do you actually do — retry, watch someone, get a tip, change one thing? Now the twist: art levels up EXACTLY the same way.
Sentence stems: “In games I get better by…” “A tip works when it…” “Art could level up the same way if…”
Stuck? Think respawns: you keep your learning even when the attempt fails. Attempt 1 in art is the same — nothing is lost, everything is data.
I DO · teacher explains
The three-attempt loop
1️⃣ Attempt 1
Have a go, no pressure. Attempt 1 is DATA, not a verdict — it shows you exactly what to work on.
💬 The coach tip
One kind, SPECIFIC tip between attempts: “slow down on the curve”, “more ink at the edge”. Vague tips (“make it better”) level up nobody.
3️⃣ Attempt 3
Same skill, tip applied. The GAP between attempt 1 and attempt 3 is what the Arts Award wants to see — photograph every stage.
🪞 Use it
Then spend your levelled-up skill on a surreal “this is me” symbol experiment — a first taste of the identity piece coming later this term.
Misconception:“If attempt 1 is bad, you’re bad at it.” Attempt 1 is the starting line, not the finish photo. Every artist’s attempt 1 looks rough — the skill is in the loop: try, tip, try again. The gap is the achievement.
WE DO · together on the board
Sort the coach tips — kind and specific, or no help at all?
A real tip names ONE exact thing to do differently. If you couldn’t act on it in ten seconds, it isn’t a tip.
HANDS-ON · the main event
Run the loop 📈
Ground rule (60 seconds): tips in this room are kind and specific — we coach the WORK, never the person.
Station 1 · THREE ATTEMPTS
Your Week 1 favourite skill, three times: attempt 1 → take a coach tip → attempt 3. Photograph every attempt in order — the strip is your proof.
Station 2 · SURREAL SYMBOL
Spend the levelled-up skill: make a quick surreal “this is me” symbol experiment — a boot, a wave, a controller, anything that stands for you.
Station 3 · THE STRIP
Stick your photo strip in the log, in order, and add the “what I improved” comment. Spoken and scribed counts. Then hold up attempt 1 vs attempt 3 — feel the gap.
Going for Grow: pin the improvement precisely: “attempt 3 is better because I ___” — one exact change, named.

Capture your evidence
Your photo strip is the evidence — TA checks it is in order. Add your comment (spoken and scribed counts):
My name:
The skill I levelled up:
What changed between attempt 1 and attempt 3:
Skills I used today (tick with your TA): Ability to learn · Resilience · Creativity
Feedback loop: your teacher will deep-mark one part of this in dark green and draw a Yellow Box. Next lesson you respond inside it in a coloured pen of your choice.
