Retrieval Quiz
Arrival Task – What Do You Already Know?
1. Say it
What is a budget for?
Any honest answer counts — say it out loud.
2. Spot it
If you have £10, can you spend £12? Why not?
Any honest answer counts — say it out loud.
3. Point to it
Point to a 'need' you'd budget for first.
Any honest answer counts — say it out loud.
1. The big idea
What does 'A budget is a plan for your money.' mean in your own words?
Own words — one honest sentence.
2. Today's work
Today is 'A Simple Budget' — plan the money. What do you think we'll be doing?
A sensible prediction — we check it at the end.
3. Success check
By the end you should be able to say: 'I can build a simple weekly budget.' What will that take today?
Name one thing you’ll need to do or try.
1. Balance
A budget 'balances' — what exactly must be true of the two sides?
Money OUT ≤ money IN — planned spending never exceeds what actually arrives.
2. First cut
Your £10 budget meets a £3 surprise. Walk through your cut order.
Wants go first, cheapest-to-lose first; needs are last resort and mean re-planning, not trimming.
3. Why written
People 'budget in their head' — why does paper (or a phone note) beat that?
Heads forget and forgive; the written plan holds you to what you decided when you were calm.

The Model — A Simple Budget
Key Idea: A budget is a plan for your money.
👀 Look: every pound gets a job — spend, save, share.
Step 0 of 3
What a budget is and why it helps.
A budget is your money with a job list: every pound assigned before it's spent. It's a plan you make once so you don't have to decide fifty times.
Putting needs before wants inside a limit.
Needs go in first because they're non-negotiable; whatever remains is the honest amount available for wants — not the amount you wish was there.
Checking what's left.
Checking what's left is the loop that keeps it real: plan, spend, check, adjust. A budget you never check is a wish.

staff tick 'made a simple budget', sign.
For the moderator, not just the folder
A tick says it happened. A witness statement says what you did. Before the photo is filed, the adult writes one sentence naming the thing they actually saw you do — and rings whether you did it Supported, Standard or Stretch.
That ring is the part that counts. It is the difference between “the class did this” and “this candidate did it, at this level, with this much help.” The witness sheet prints with every pack.

1.
Design the surprise-expense that would break your budget — then redesign the budget so it doesn't.
Own answer — the fix is usually a small buffer line before wants.
2.
Why is 'what I'd cut first' a decision to make BEFORE the crisis?
A budget says no to something you want. Is that the budget failing or working?
Working — the no protects a bigger yes you chose earlier.

Scaffolding – Supported
Access & sensory notes (staff)
· The supported task today is: Build the budget with the money and picture cards on the needs-first mat — the needs row is marked, so fill it before the wants row.
· Fine motor: offer the chunky-grip pen, and accept a card sort or a spoken answer scribed by an adult — the judgement is the evidence, not the handwriting.
· Sensory: Money is the sensitive part here, not noise. Every example stays practice money, and nobody is ever asked what their family has or spends.
· Cognitive load: a completed small piece beats a half-done large one at moderation. Cut the target, never the thinking.
· Ring the level honestly on the witness sheet. Supported with the work finished is a stronger portfolio entry than Standard with it abandoned.
