Retrieval Quiz
Arrival Task β What Do You Already Know?
1. Say it
Name a fruit or vegetable.
Any honest answer counts β say it out loud.
2. Spot it
Is bread a carbohydrate? Yes/no.
Any honest answer counts β say it out loud.
3. Point to it
Point to a healthy food.
Any honest answer counts β say it out loud.
1. The big idea
What does 'Food is fuel β mix the groups.' mean in your own words?
Own words β one honest sentence.
2. Today's work
Today is 'Food Groups' β the eatwell guide. What do you think we'll be doing?
A sensible prediction β we check it at the end.
3. Success check
By the end you should be able to say: 'I can name the main food groups.' What will that take today?
Name one thing youβll need to do or try.
1. Two jobs
Pick two food groups and explain the different jobs they do for your body.
E.g. carbs = energy to run the day; protein = building and repairing muscle.
2. Double agent
Some foods sit in two groups. Name one and argue both seats.
E.g. beans: protein (building) AND count toward veg β cheese: dairy and protein.
3. Missing
A plate is all carbs. What starts going wrong, and when?
Energy now, but no repair or defence β tiredness and getting run-down follow the gaps.

The Model β Food Groups
Key Idea: Food is fuel β mix the groups.
π Look: every food group has a job β together they power you.
Step 0 of 3
The Eatwell Guide groups and what each does.
The Eatwell Guide's groups each do a job: fruit and veg defend, carbs fuel, protein builds, dairy strengthens, and fats/sugars are the small slice, not the main act.
Sorting real foods into their groups.
Sorting real foods builds the instant read β toast to carbs, beans to protein, apple to fruit β until a plate's shape is obvious at a glance.
Why balance matters (allergy list checked first).
Balance matters because bodies need all the jobs done every day β and the allergy list is checked first, always, before any food is out.

Proving It β The Evidence Loop
Key Idea: Launch extension: one written line β the food group your plate forgets most often.
A tick says it happened. A witness statement says what you did. Before the photo is filed, the adult writes one sentence naming the thing they actually saw you do — and rings whether you did it Supported, Standard or Stretch.
That ring is the part that counts. It is the difference between “the class did this” and “this candidate did it, at this level, with this much help.” The witness sheet prints with every pack.

π Take it further
Task: Sort the real foods onto the Eatwell mat, then say why balance matters. Stretch: find a food that fits TWO groups β and explain how.
Steps: Task first, stretch second β and your annotation should explain the why, not just the what.

3.
Which group does your normal week shortchange, honestly? First fix?
Own honest answer + one specific, doable addition.

Scaffolding β Supported
Access & sensory notes (staff)
· The supported task today is: Place the food picture cards into the labelled Eatwell zones. Two are placed already as worked examples.
· Fine motor: offer the chunky-grip pen, and accept a card sort or a spoken answer scribed by an adult — the judgement is the evidence, not the handwriting.
· Sensory: Smell, texture and handling are the load in a food lesson. Check the allergy list before the practical, offer nitrile gloves for anyone who does not want to touch the food directly, and let a pupil prepare without tasting. Never comment on what a pupil eats or how much.
· Cognitive load: a completed small piece beats a half-done large one at moderation. Cut the target, never the thinking.
· Ring the level honestly on the witness sheet. Supported with the work finished is a stronger portfolio entry than Standard with it abandoned.
