Key Idea: Staying in learning until 18 is the law — how you do it is your choice.

The rule: you must stay in education or training until you turn 18.

In England you cannot stop learning at 16 — you must be in education or training until you turn 18. It does not mean staying at school. It means doing nothing is not one of the options.

The four routes — college, apprenticeship, work with study, supported internship.

Full-time college — A levels, T Levels or a vocational course. An apprenticeship — a real job with a wage, training built in. Work or volunteering with part-time study alongside it. Or a supported internship — mostly workplace learning with a job coach, for young people with an EHC plan.

Matching a route to the strengths you have already evidenced.

Your route follows your proof. Hands-on strengths point at practical courses and apprenticeships; people strengths point at care and service work. Last week's profile is this week's shortlist.

For the moderator, not just the folder

A tick says it happened. A witness statement says what you did. Before the photo is filed, the adult writes one sentence naming the thing they actually saw you do — and rings whether you did it Supported, Standard or Stretch.

That ring is the part that counts. It is the difference between “the class did this” and “this candidate did it, at this level, with this much help.” The witness sheet prints with every pack.

· Fine motor: offer the chunky-grip pen, and accept a card sort or a spoken answer scribed by an adult — the judgement is the evidence, not the handwriting.
· Sensory: Talking about jobs and futures is loaded for some pupils — a parent out of work, an older sibling who left with nothing. Offer the write-it-first route before any share-aloud, and never ask a pupil to name a family member’s job.
· Cognitive load: a completed small piece beats a half-done large one at moderation. Cut the target, never the thinking.
· Ring the level honestly on the witness sheet. Supported with the work finished is a stronger portfolio entry than Standard with it abandoned.
