Frame the Local Challenge

Teesside Art Studio Suite Β· Silver Arts Award

Progress SoW Β· Arts AutΒ 1 Β· 2026–27 Β· LAUNCH Β· Week 1🎨 Silver Unit 1A Β· Identify an Arts Challenge
Enquiry: How can a Teesside enquiry become a demanding, achievable and personally meaningful arts challenge?

Success looks like

  • I can frame a local challenge my arts practice can answer
  • I can define success for the project in my own terms
  • I can justify why THIS challenge, HERE, NOW
Aspire Β· GOLD reach: frame it so someone else could pick it up from your brief alone.

Retrieval Quiz

Arrival Task – What Do You Already Know?

1. Bronze (Recall)

What did your Bronze skill share teach someone?

Own answer.

2. Challenge (Recall)

What makes a goal a challenge?

It stretches you β€” not already easy.

3. Local (Recall)

Name one Teesside place that could hold an art project.

Own answer.

4. Time (Recall)

How many weeks does Unit 1 run?

Four (W1-4).

Starter

Starter: The Right-Sized Mountain

Key Question: Silver starts by choosing a mountain: too small and the climb proves nothing, too big and you never summit in four weeks. What's YOUR right-sized mountain?
⛰️

Too Big

'A mural on the bridge'

Never summits
🐜

Too Small

'Another sketchbook page'

Proves nothing
🎯

Right-Sized

A linked series, a new scale, a hard process

Demanding + achievable
πŸ“‹

The Statement

Challenge + baseline + criteria + dates

Unit 1A's document

Pairs: pitch a too-big and a too-small version of YOUR idea. The right size usually lives between them.

I Do

I Do: Writing a Challenge Statement

Key Idea: Four sentences make Unit 1A real: the challenge, the baseline, the success criteria, the schedule.
Step 0 of 4

The challenge sentence

'I will produce a three-piece linked series on Teesside thresholds at A3 in mixed media.' Specific, countable, dated territory.

The baseline sentence

'Currently I work at A5 and my washes flood at scale.' The honest start line β€” growth measures FROM here.

The criteria sentences

'Success = all three pieces resolved, the series reading as one body, wash control evidenced at A3.' Measurable now, checkable in Week 3.

The schedule

'W1 plan + tests, W2 research feeds it, W3 implement + develop, W4 experience feeds the close.' Four weeks, mapped to the unit.

We Do

We Do: Tap the Challenge Test

How it works: Tap each proposed challenge β€” passes or fails the demand/achievability test, and why. Found: 0/6
πŸŒ‰ 'Paint a public mural'
πŸ“„ 'Fill ten sketchbook pages'
πŸ–ΌοΈ 'Three-piece A3 linked series'
πŸ§ͺ 'Master screen printing from zero'
πŸ’» 'Make a digital piece'
πŸ‘€ 'Copy a famous artwork bigger'

I Do

I Do: First Tests, Same Day

Key Idea: A challenge statement earns belief by testing its hardest part immediately: the risk goes to scrap in Week 1, not Week 3.
Step 0 of 3

Name the hardest part

Mine: wash control at A3. That's the sentence most likely to sink the series β€” so it gets tested TODAY.

The scrap test

Quarter-sheet A3 scrap, the flooding wash attempted twice with Week 2 Bronze diagnostics running. Result logged either way.

Adjust the statement

Test says: control possible with a damp-not-wet brush + working flat. The criteria sentence gains a method note. Statements that met their tests get believed β€” by assessors and by you.

We Do

We Do: Match the Statement Part β†’ Its Job

Step 1: Tap a card, then its partner. Step 2: Watch the WAGOLL write itself. Score: 0/6

Independent Work

Independent Work β€” Studio Time

Instructions: Work at your level. Shrink line: if today's scrap test shows slow drying or a technique still wobbling, drop the scale now β€” before any Week 3 making β€” and write the smaller plan on your challenge statement. Shrinking early is a decision; shrinking late is a rescue. Evidence photos go in your Arts Award portfolio β€” your challenge statement + demand/achievability test sheet (Unit 1A opens).

Steps: All Standard Β· risks honest Β· mitigations concrete Β· each shrink keeps the ambition.

Lundy Loop

Lundy Loop β€” Your Voice in the Studio

Why: Article 12 β€” your view on this work counts, and it changes what the studio does next.

πŸšͺ SPACE

Challenge territories are yours to claim β€” statements can be built anywhere the thinking works, materials follow the plan.

πŸ“£ VOICE

Pitch your challenge sentence to the room; the room applies the two-word test aloud: demanding? achievable?

πŸ‘₯ AUDIENCE

Statements are written for the adviser AND your Week 4 sharing audience β€” Unit 1 ends in public.

⭐ INFLUENCE

The class's common hardest-parts set Week 3's technical clinics β€” the studio stocks and schedules around YOUR risks.
