Key Idea: Watch the tool decisions, not just the results: pressure, speed, water, order.

👀 Look: industrial surfaces — rust, rivets, texture — become techniques in your hands.

Dry-brush for corrugation

Almost no paint, dragged across — the brush skips and the ridges appear. Speed matters: slow drags smear.

Frottage for brick

Paper over real texture, soft pencil sideways. The wall draws itself — then I work INTO the rubbing.

Layered wash for river

Wet grey wash, dry fully, second darker wash stopping short — the stripe of first-layer that shows through IS the light on the water.

Key Idea: The same rust patch, three intentions: copy it faithfully, push it louder, or turn it into something new. Intention decides technique.

Recreate

Faithful rust: stipple, true colours, patient. The test of control.

Exaggerate

Rust turned UP: oranges hotter, textures rougher, the patch grown huge. The test of nerve.

Transform

Rust as a map, a face, a coastline: the surface becomes a starting point. The test of imagination — and Week 4's brief will ask which you choose.

Task: 5 labelled strips including one deliberate second attempt after a failure, plus the recreate/exaggerate/transform choice named.

Steps: Five stations · one 'again with…' retry · intention chosen + one line why.

Stretch

Task: 6 strips + one combined-surface strip (two techniques layered), with a technical note on the order and drying decision.

Steps: All stations · the combination planned before painted · order + drying note · intention justified against Week 4.
