The 5 D's of being an active bystander

Word	What it means
Bystander	Someone who is present and sees what is happening.
Bystander effect	The more people present, the less likely any one person acts.
Active bystander	Someone who safely steps in, distracts, or gets help.
The 5 D's	Direct, Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay — safe ways to help.
Diffusion of responsibility	Everyone assumes someone else will deal with it, so no one does.
Writer's purpose	The reason a writer chooses to include something in a story.
Assumption	A fixed idea about something that may turn out to be wrong.
Reporting	Telling someone in authority what has happened.
Empathy	Understanding and sharing how someone else feels.
Consent	Freely, willingly agreeing — freely given, informed, enthusiastic.

The storyline in four steps

On the bus, a man behaves sexually towards Aimee without her consent. Other passengers are nearby.
No one steps in. Aimee freezes, then plays it down afterwards.
She tells Maeve, who takes it seriously; her friends rally round and support her.
Later the impact shows — Aimee is too frightened to get on a bus.

Revision prose

Key distinction: a passive bystander stays out of it; an active bystander does something safe. Helping never has to mean confronting anyone — the 5 D's are all safe options.

Memory hook: the five D's — Direct, Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay.

Common mark-losers: blaming the bystanders instead of explaining the bystander effect; saying only "the writer wanted to raise awareness" without saying of what or why.
