You've already used a compass round Eston Rec, climbed Eston Hills, and planned and walked your own local route. Now we step it up to the coast: today we plan the South Gare → Coatham Dunes → Majuba walk — the one we actually do on the 16th of June. Get the plan right and you lead it on the day.

Why plan a route before a group sets off along an exposed coast?

The route: South Gare to Majuba runs along Coatham Sands — a protected stretch (SSSI) of marram dunes with ground-nesting birds, right by the sea at Redcar.

🔍 What's wrong with this plan?

My route: South Gare → cut straight across the dunes → home.

Kit: phone, crisps, and an umbrella ☂️.

"No need for a map — I'll just follow the lake."

❌ Keep to the coastal path — cutting across the dunes damages a protected habitat and disturbs nesting birds.

❌ Finish at Majuba, not "home" — keep off the fragile dunes, and swap the umbrella for waterproofs.

❌ "Just follow the lake" — you need a map and compass to navigate and stay safe.

🧭 Take a bearing off the map

The leader's method

1. Lay the compass edge from where you are to the next control.

2. Turn the dial so its lines point to grid north (straight up the map).

3. Read the bearing at the index line.

Bearings: N = 000° · E = 090° · S = 180° · W = 270°. The diagonals (NE/SE/SW/NW) are the trip-ups.

A leader describes a route using at least two types of terminology, then follows the bearings control to control — that's orienteering.

Two types is the minimum (LO4)

"Head south-east (direction) for 900 m (distance) to the Open Dunes (landmark)."

Other types: grid reference, time, contour features.

From the Open Dunes to the SSSI — give me two types of terminology.

"Head south-east for about 1 km to Coatham Sands SSSI." Direction + distance + landmark = three types.
