L1d · Do Now — While You Settle In
Name:
Class:
Date:
Settle in quietly. No phones. We'll begin in a few minutes.
1 · Have a guess
How many different plants do you think live in one footstep-sized patch of meadow? Write your number.
2 · True or false?
Circle T or F. Have a go even if you're not sure.
A quadrat is a square frame you use to count what's inside.T / F
Placing samples randomly makes the results fairer.T / F
A worn path usually has more plant types than an untouched meadow.T / F
Being outside in green space can help us feel calmer.T / F
3 · Ready for the afternoon?
Tick anything that's true for you:
- I've got shoes I can walk on grass in.
- I know we stick to the paths to protect the meadow.
- I'm okay to have a go at the quiet noticing activity.

Lesson learning outcomes
- Name how scientists sample a habitat (quadrat, transect)
- Say why we sample instead of counting everything
- Notice the living things around me — and how being outside feels
The sampling toolkit
QuadratA square frame (often 50cm). Put it down, count what's inside.
TransectA line across a habitat — sample along it to see how it changes.
Random samplingPlacing samples by chance so results are fair, not biased.
ID keyA spotter sheet to name what you find (daisy, clover, plantain…).
BiodiversityThe variety of different living things in a place.
SpeciesOne particular type of living thing, e.g. a daisy.
Key facts
Where: the grassland at Portrack Marsh — part of a protected SSSI mosaic (ponds, reedbeds, grassland, scrub).
Why sample: you can't count a whole field — small fair samples give a picture of the whole habitat.
Human impact: trampling and litter harm a meadow; the right care (cutting/grazing at the right time) keeps it full of life.
Looking after yourself outdoors
Being in green space can help us feel calmer and less stressed. A simple way to steady yourself anywhere green — the 5-4-3-2-1:
👀 5 things you can see · 👂 4 you can hear · ✋ 3 you can feel · 👃 2 you can smell · 🌬️ 1 slow breath (in for 4, out for 6).
Memory hooks
Quadrat: "A square you share with the daisies." 🔲
Sample, don't count all: "Small squares, done fair, tell you what's there."
Biodiversity: "More kinds = more life." 🦋
L1d · We Do — The Sampling Steps, In Order
Name:
Class:
Date:
✅ Completed together as a class. This is the order we agreed. Write the number 1–5 in each box to show you know it.
Choose your spot — randomly, to be fair
Place the quadrat down
Count what's inside it
Record it on your sheet
Move along and repeat
Why does doing them in this order matter?
L1d · Field Recording & Reflection
Name: Spot / area:
Take this out to the grassland. Fill it in as you go — no rush.
1 · Your quadrat
Sketch what's inside your square. Draw roughly where each plant sits.
2 · Tally — what did you find?
| Plant / living thing | Tally / how many |

How many different types did you find in total? ________
3 · Compare two spots
Which had more variety — the path edge or the open meadow? Why do you think that is?
4 · Reflection (only share if you want to)
One thing I noticed outside today:
One word for how the green space felt:
