The Setup

Briefing — Creative Director's Office, 4:15 PM

"Darlings, gather round. We have a problem."

A successful launch doesn't happen because one person nailed it. It happens because every person on the team knew their job, trusted each other, and didn't fall apart when things went sideways.

Today you'll find out if your team can do the same — or whether tonight's launch will be the kind of disaster people whisper about for weeks. Your mission: beat the rival team in a timed setup challenge. There's a catch. It's a big one. And yes, you're going to hate it.

— K. Archer, Creative Director ✒

Round 1 happens before the break. After the break, the rules change — and the Final Round decides who takes the trophy.

Post-Trip Reflection · Session 1

The Challenge & Your Team Roles

The Setup — Round 1 Rules

  • Move "stock" from the Stockroom (start zone) to the Shop Floor (end zone).
  • You have 2 minutes. Most items delivered wins.
  • The Runner is blindfolded. Only the Voice may speak to them.
  • Only one item can be carried at a time.
  • Only the Runner crosses the Stockroom line. Everyone else stays put.

Not wearing the blindfold? Totally fine.

Closing your eyes works exactly the same way. We're on trust here, not on stage. Do what feels okay for you.

Class of 6 → 2 teams of 3

With 3 per team, you double up: Director + Lookout, Voice + Scribe, Runner solo (running blind takes enough focus).

Challenge

Director

Click to flip

Sets the strategy. Assigns every role. Calls changes if it breaks down. Nobody moves without the Director's plan.

Core

Voice

Click to flip

The only voice the Runner hears. Calm. Specific. "Two steps forward. Reach left. You've got it."

Core

Runner

Click to flip

Blindfolded (or eyes closed). Moves between Stockroom and Shop Floor. One item at a time. Trusts the Voice.

Support

Scribe

Click to flip

Counts every successful delivery. Shouts encouragement. Keeps the team calm. Simple — but honestly, vital.

Core

Lookout

Click to flip

Watches the rival team. Feeds the Director intel: what's working for them, what isn't. Nicking ideas is allowed.

✦ Eyes Only ✦

Your Role Has a Secret.

Each of you gets a folded card — your own secret brief. Inside: one job only you know about, and one rule only you have to follow. Your team literally cannot pull off the launch without what's on your card.

Teacher: print, cut along the dotted lines, hand each girl her card privately. No peeking at each other's.

Post-Trip Reflection · Session 1

Plan Your Team Strategy

Split into teams. You have 5 minutes to: (1) assign roles, (2) agree on the exact calls your Voice will use, (3) decide your path from Stockroom to Shop Floor.

Support

Not sure where you fit? Take Scribe. You count, encourage, and keep the team from spiralling. Absolutely needed.

Challenge

Take Director. Lead the strategy discussion. Make sure every person on the team knows their job before Round 1 starts.

1 · Roles

Director, Voice, Runner, Scribe, Lookout.

2 · Calls

Agree 4 short commands — "left", "right", "grab", "drop".

3 · Path

Safest route. Pickup order. Handoff point.

Round 1 — The Setup

Rules Reminder

  • Runner blindfolded (or eyes closed). Voice only.
  • One item at a time. Two minutes on the clock.
  • Scribe counts. Lookout watches. Director calls the shots.

K. Archer

"Darlings — scrap that. There's a VIP allergy I should've mentioned. Any item tagged red must never touch the shop floor — take it straight to the back. Don't ask why. Just do it. And don't panic. You've got this. Probably. Bye darling!"

Teacher — watch for

Clear role-taking · calmness when the plan breaks · whose voice the Runner actually follows · what happens when two teams both start talking at once.

✦ Breaking — 17:04 ✦

A VIP Just Complained.

"The setup isn't right. The launch is in trouble."

Voicemail · K. Archer · Creative Director

"Darlings — slight disaster. The principal sponsor walked in early and saw the whole setup. They're threatening to pull funding unless we pull off a flawless Silent Service. Flawless. No margin for error. The rules for Round 2 are going to bite.

Go. Have a break. Come back with your heads on. This isn't over — it's exactly where the good bit starts."

— K. ✒

On Your Break — Carry This With You

If you had to launch in total silence — what's the one thing your team would need to agree on now to stop it falling apart? Don't write it. Just think about it. Tell your team when you come back in.

Return to Set

Debrief — Pull Round 1 Apart

3 minutes in your teams. Then 2 minutes whole-class share. Be honest — this is how the Final Round gets won.

Question 1

What worked?

One specific thing your team did well. Not "teamwork" — be precise.

Question 2

What fell apart?

One moment the system broke. Why did it break?

Question 3

What will you change?

One concrete change for the Final. Say it out loud to your team.

Push it further: A West End show rehearses the same scene for weeks before opening night. Why bother? What do they get out of repetition that one round can't give you?

Post-Trip Reflection · Session 2

Final Round — The Rules Change

New Rule

Silent Service

The doors are open. The guests are here. You cannot break character.

Not one word. Claps, nods, taps on the shoulder, pre-agreed signals only. Speak — and that delivery doesn't count.

3 minutes to refine

  • Replace your verbal calls with physical signals.
  • Agree a "stop — reset" signal for when it goes wrong.
  • Re-brief your Runner. Their trust in you is everything now.

The Final Round — Silent Service

This is it — The Final

  • Complete silence. Any speech = that delivery doesn't count.
  • Two minutes. Most items delivered wins.
  • Totals add to Round 1 — highest combined score takes the trophy.

Your Private Account

Fill out the sheet — just for you.

No one reads it unless you want them to. Even if your team won, lost, or fell apart — this is your honest version of what happened.

Push it further: Is a great team a group of great players — or a great group? Write one sentence arguing your view.

Post-Trip Reflection · Session 2

The Gala

For vision, for voice, for sheer stubborn refusal to give up.

Teacher: hand out these honours however you like. Every person leaves with at least one. No exceptions.

💡

The Visionary

Best strategy. Saw the angle the rest of us missed.

🎤

The Voice

Calm, clear, impossible to miss. The Runner never had to ask twice.

🪷

Grace Under Pressure

When it all went sideways, stayed completely calm.

Main Character Energy

Went for it. Fully. Committed 100% — no half-measures.

📈

The Comeback

Had a rough Round 1. Came back in the Final. Phoenix behaviour.

🫶

Heart of the Team

Kept everyone going when it got hard. The reason the team held together.

✦ The Opening Night Trophy ✦

"And now — the team that pulled it off…"

Other team: no trophy, but you get full receipts and a comeback arc people will talk about. Honestly, better storyline.
