⚡ POWERHOUSE

ATP & Aerobic Respiration — your cells' energy arcade

🔋🍬💨🔥
Success Criteria — by the end you can…
  • Say where respiration happens and what ATP is (the energy currency).
  • Write the word equation for aerobic respiration.
  • Explain that energy is released (not made) from glucose.
Aspire 🚀

Write the balanced symbol equation and explain why “energy” isn’t a chemical formula in it.

Arrival Task

Power on 🔌

As you settle — two quick ones in your head:

1. Right now, sitting still, is your body using energy? Yes / No
2. Name one thing your body needs energy for.

1. YES — even resting you need energy (heartbeat, breathing, staying warm, brain).

2. Any of: moving, growing, keeping warm, building new molecules, sending nerve signals.

Misconception

“Respiration means breathing in and out.”

❌ Breathing moves air. Respiration is a chemical reaction inside every cell that releases energy from glucose.

Quick check: Which part of the cell is called the “powerhouse”?

What is ATP? 🔋

1. Glucose is the fuel — but cells can’t use it directly for everything.
2. Respiration releases energy from glucose inside the mitochondria.
3. That energy is stored in ATP — think of it as a rechargeable battery 🔋 or the cell’s “energy currency” 💷.
4. When a cell needs energy, it “spends” ATP. Then respiration recharges it.
Exam tip 💡

Energy is released from glucose — never “made” or “created”. Examiners love that word.

TURN & TALK: If ATP is a rechargeable battery, what “recharges” it? Tell your partner in one sentence.

Fill the gap as a class: Respiration happens in the ______ and releases energy from ______, storing it as ______.

Respiration happens in the mitochondria and releases energy from glucose, storing it as ATP.

Aerobic respiration 💨

Aerobic = WITH oxygen. This releases the most energy and runs most of the time.

Word equation:
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy / ATP)
Symbol equation:
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O
In: glucose (fuel) + oxygen.   Out: carbon dioxide + water + energy.
Watch out

“Plants don’t respire.”All living cells respire, all the time — day and night.

💬
TURN & TALK: What are the two things going IN and the two things coming OUT?

______ + ______ → ______ + ______ (+ energy)

IN starts with a sugar and a gas you breathe in. OUT is a gas you breathe out and a liquid.

glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)

  1. Respiration happens in the ____________ .
  2. Energy from glucose is stored as ____________ .
  3. Complete: glucose + ________ → carbon dioxide + ________ .
  1. Write the full word equation for aerobic respiration.
  2. What does “aerobic” mean?
  3. Why is ATP called the cell’s energy currency? (1 sentence)
  1. Write the word and balanced symbol equation.
  2. Explain why “energy” appears in the word equation but not as a formula in the symbol equation.
  3. Aerobic respiration releases far more energy than anaerobic — suggest why oxygen matters.

F: mitochondria · ATP · glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water.

M: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy) · “aerobic” = with oxygen · ATP stores & transfers energy cells can spend instantly.

H: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O · energy isn’t a substance/molecule so it has no formula · oxygen lets glucose be fully broken down, releasing much more energy.

Exit Ticket

Charged up? 🔋

  1. Where in the cell does respiration happen?
  2. What is the job of ATP?
  3. Word equation for aerobic respiration?
  4. True or false: energy is made in respiration.

1. Mitochondria.  2. Stores & transfers energy (energy currency / battery).

3. glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy).

4. False — energy is released, not made.
